He worked for brands such as Calvin Klein, Dior Homme, Hugo Boss, and Armani, appearing in high-profile campaigns and editorials that made him one of the most recognizable male models of his decade. He transitioned into acting mid-2000s with supporting roles before gaining wider recognition in 2011 on ABC's *Once Upon a Time*. His dramatic breakthrough arrived with *The Fall* (2013–2016), where he portrayed Paul Spector, a Belfast serial killer — a performance praised for its restraint and psychological depth. Global fame followed when he starred as Christian Grey in the *Fifty Shades of Grey* film trilogy (2015–2018), adapted from the bestselling novels. Following that franchise, Dornan pursued roles with greater tonal and genre variation, including *A Private War*, the series *The Tourist*, and the Oscar-nominated coming-of-age drama *Belfast* (2021), in which he played the father of a young boy growing up during the Troubles. Before acting, Dornan was also part of a folk music duo, Sons of Jim, which released several singles before disbanding in 2008. Outside of his professional career, he married English singer-songwriter Amelia Warner in 2013, and they have three daughters. Known for his range from romantic protagonist to psychologically dark roles, Dornan continues to work across film and television in both American and European productions.
